About
Savannah
.
Savannah,
Georgia is situated along the Georgia coast on the South
Carolina border. Savannah is the original state
capital and was founded by James Oglethorpe. Today
Savannah, Georgia retains much of its historic beginnings by
way of preserved and renovated architecture, old cemeteries,
the occasional plantation, and more.
Oglethorpe had asked King George of England to charter the
colony of Georgia and the city of Savannah based on these
three points: 1. To start a militarily buffer designed
to protect valuable South Carolina property from Spanish
Florida. 2. To help alleviate debtors prisons by
allowing jailbirds to work off their debt in Savannah.
3. To grow mulberry plantations and culture the silk worm.
The original
charter for the city of Savannah, Georgia also included four
prohibitions: no slavery, no alcohol, no Catholics,
and no lawyers.
Today
Savannah, Georgia is a small to mid size city that has
protected its historical landmarks. Savannah is known
for being a musical center of jazz and blues. Johnny
Mercer is amongst some of the famous musicians arising from
Savannah. Savannah hosts an annual Music Festival and
a Jazz Festival, along with other cultural festivals that
include music (such as the Greek Festival and the Asian
Festival.)
