Savannah Music
article by J. Walker
The Savannah Music scene has seen its fair
share of ebbs and flows, but the people
involved feel Savannah is in position to
swell again.
Savannah is known as a city of jazz and home
of the late talented musician, Johnny
Mercer. However, the last few years
have seen a decline of jazz concerts and
events in the Savannah music scene. The
annual Savannah Jazz Festival and Savannah
Music Festival have seen a sharp decline in
participation.
Some experts, however, blame the decline on
economics, and expect to see that trend
change. Likewise, in the contemporary
and "night life" music scene, a drastic
change in direction is predicted.
One reason is due to the internet and easy
accessibility to new music. People are
starting to get a taste for frequently
discovering new and unique music, rather
than hearing the same top 40 songs over and
over--which means that original bands are
more appealing now to club and venue goers.
Likewise, music fans are able to access old
music and forgotten gems, causing an
interest in retro music to peak.
